Responsibilities
This Junior System Engineer position is in Digital Channels, one of Fiserv’s fastest growing business units. He/she will work on Digital Channels’ Application Monitoring and Automation team which is responsible for monitoring the availability and performance of the online banking service platforms we host in Fiserv’s data centers and the clients on those platforms. This role is part of the team responsible for utilizing our suite of monitoring and automation tools to fire detailed alerts as accurately and quickly as possible to allow the Support teams to effectively respond. When possible, the team also implements automated responses to try to remediate an issue before manual response is necessary. You will work with a wide range of systems and technologies and partner with many different teams across Fiserv to ensure broad and robust monitoring coverage.
The Application Monitoring and Automation team does not perform traditional incident response or on-call support but occasional assistance with high priority incidents is sometimes necessary and after hours work is occasionally needed to support certain client go-lives and system changes. On call support rotations may be rolled out in the future.
The key factors to success in this role are:
A passion for learning and technology. This role works with various technology platforms and scripting/programming languages. Successful candidates are excited about opportunities to learn about and work with new technologies.
Enjoys working with people and relationship building. This role must coordinate with many different teams to achieve our goals. Having strong and productive relationships with these teams is critical for driving projects across the finish line.
Has strong organizational skills. This team typically has several efforts going at any time such as large strategic efforts, shorter term tactical efforts, and efforts to address immediate issues/fires. A successful candidate will be comfortable switching from one effort to another when they are blocked, or when priorities change, and then return to that effort when appropriate.
Essential Job Duties:
Use tools, such as Splunk, WebDriver, and DynaTrace to monitor the availability and performance of the Digital Channels environments
This role will work to reduce the overall volume of alerts being triggered on daily basis. Sperate from the investigations that the application support teams perform when they receive an alert, this role will also spend time reviewing some alerts in order to understand if monitoring needs to be tuned, maintenance windows need to be added, or if support teams need to investigate further.
Occasionally assist with high priority outages. This position is exposed to the details of how Digital Channels’ applications work and how they integrate with other systems and services which makes the position well suited to occasionally assist with issue diagnosis.
Work with automation engineers to rollout automated action, create change requests to schedule their deployment, and deploy them during maintenance windows.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required. Major in Computer Science, Engineering preferred.
0 to 3 years of experience in Windows Systems Engineering or Application Support
Some knowledge or experience with monitoring and/or system management tools
Experience in supporting multi-tiered applications
Familiarity with web logs, HTTP headers, and web services
